They are often placed in front of temple gates in pairs—the "A-gyo" statue with its open mouth and the "Un-gyo" statue with its firm, taut mouth—to drive away enemies of Buddhism and evil spirits. Their brows are raised and their eyes are wide open, representing a menacing expression.
