Explanation of Soma ware
Soma ware is a traditional craft of Fukushima Prefecture with a 350-year history, originating from the official kilns of the Soma Domain. Each piece is carefully turned on a potter's wheel by hand by artisans, giving it a unique character that is beloved by many customers. The celadon glaze used for Soma ware was originally made from Toyama stone from the local town of Namie. However, due to the nuclear accident in 2011, it became impossible to collect this stone, but with the cooperation of the Fukushima Prefectural High-Tech Plaza, an alternative glaze was developed to reproduce the unique blue cracks that this celadon glaze exquisitely creates, successfully reviving the traditional design.
Blue crack explanation
The "blue cracks (crazing)" that are characteristic of Soma ware are complex surface patterns that are exquisitely created by the difference in shrinkage rates between the glaze and the base. The faint sound of cracking that occurs when the thin glassy layer on the base breaks is so beautiful that it has been selected as one of the "30 Sounds of Beautiful Islands."
Double firing explanation
"Double ware" is a technique unique to Soma ware, in which two vessels are stacked on top of each other. By creating a layer of air between the inner surface where the liquid is poured and the outer surface that comes into contact with the hand, hot drinks do not cool down easily and the vessel is easy to hold.
