Even today, it is still used as incense in religious ceremonies, and burning requires an external heat source such as charcoal. Frankincense is an oleomeric resin that exudes from trees when the bark is scratched or cut. On contact with air, the liquid solidifies into a ball-shaped mass or "teardrop" shape. Powdered frankincense powder hardens quickly when re-exposed to air. The resinous solid form of fragrance is used as an ingredient in many perfumes.
