[Synopsis] 1,500 years ago, during the Silla period. Moo-myung (Park Seo-joon), who lives in a village of outcasts, infiltrates the capital with his best friend Man-moon (Lee Kwang-soo), who is searching for his long-lost family. However, the two are pursued by the Imperial Guard and seriously injured, with Man-moon losing his life. Moo-myung, adopting Man-moon's real name, "Sun-woo," resolves to live in order to protect his sister A-ro (Ara). Meanwhile, King Jinheung (Park Hyung-sik), the 24th king of Silla, lives in hiding at the command of his mother, Queen Jiso, the regent. King Jinheung, who suffers from insomnia, is lulled to sleep while listening to the storyteller Ah-ro's tales in town, and becomes interested in her. Meanwhile, Queen Jiso declares that she will gather handsome noblemen and create the royal guard, the Hwarang. Moo-myung, also known as Sun-woo, seeks revenge against those who took his best friend's life, while King Jinheung becomes a Hwarang under the false name of Ji-di in order to reclaim the throne from his mother.
