The Asashio-class was a large fleet-class destroyer following the Shiratsuyu-class, and served as the basis for the subsequent Kagero and Yugumo-class destroyers.
While equipped with armament similar to that of the Special Type, this class was redesigned with an emphasis on hull strength and stability. By the time of the war, its torpedoes had been changed to Type 93 oxygen torpedoes,
and it was also the first ship to be equipped with sonar, giving it underwater reconnaissance capabilities and a well-balanced gun and torpedo armament.
The second destroyer, Ooshio, was completed in 1937 and assigned to the 8th Destroyer Squadron, participating in the Malayan Landings and the Bali Invasion.
It later took part in Operation Ke, the evacuation of Guadalcanal, three times, all of which were successful.
